Team Surrey Cricket have launched their first women's-only Cricket sessions at Surrey Sports Park!
I have been involved with rowing from a young age and whilst studying at Surrey I have achieved a National Team vest and medal and a win at Henley Royal Regatta.
Surrey Sports Park has contributed to my sporting experience at Surrey massively, not only with the fantastic facilities but the access to physiotherapists, nutritionists, sports psychologists and physiologists as part of the HPASS athlete programme. This was a big factor in choosing to study at Surrey.
To me, Team Surrey represents an ambitious University Sports Team looking to make its mark at BUCS. I'm also proud that we've won Varsity against Kingston on numerous occasions.
I feel it's important for students to get involved in sport and fitness as part of their university experience. My advice to any students considering getting involved with Team Surrey would be - go for it! It's a great experience and you'll make loads of great friends as well as staying healthy."
"I am the Team Racing Captain of the Sailing Club here at Surrey, being part of the sailing club has provided me with great opportunities such as yacht racing. I am also a member of the Karting team, competing against other Universities nationally.
I have been a member of national RYA sailing squads since the age of twelve, in various different classes of boat. As well as competing individually I also compete in other disciplines of sailing, including team racing, match racing and yacht racing, all of which we do at Surrey.
Being on the HPASS scheme has been very helpful with my sport and fitness while being at Surrey. It is great to be provided with a strength and conditioning trainer with weekly training sessions. Also, the financial benefits have helped with event entry fees, travel and kit which can all be very expensive.
I think that the biggest achievement while being at Surrey has to be having myself and another Team Surrey member finish first and second in the laser class at the BUCS Fleet Racing Nationals this year, securing valuable BUCS points and contributing to the placing in the top three men's teams overall.
I think that having Surrey Sports Park is one of the main reasons for growth within sport at Surrey, with great facilities to train and compete. I feel it's important for students to get involved with sport and fitness whilst at University because it is the perfect place to play sport that you have always enjoyed, or even try something new."
"I started playing basketball when I was five in my school's academy. My school had a long history in basketball so I was always surrounded by amazing coaches. I realised I was actually good at around the age of 14 and at the age of 15 I was selected in the Greek national team for under 16s. This led to the under 18s team and later on I came to Surrey to captain the university team.
I cannot stress enough how important Surrey Sports Park has been to my University experience. I think I've been here every single day since I have joined Surrey and it's been amazing. The strength and conditioning facilities are fantastic and the sports hall is one of the best I've been in. Overall I can truly say that it raises the image of the university. I have to admit that Surrey Sports Park was a major influence when I accepted my offer from Surrey.
I am particularly proud of the promotion of the team to division 1 in my first year and the first position in division 1 in my second year. Both of those achievements led to Team Surrey Basketball Men's 1st team be named Team Surrey Team of the Year 2014/15!
To me, Team Surrey represents friendship, Varsity and Citrus at Rubix! I absolutely believe that it's important for students to get involved with Team Surrey during their studies. There are so many sports to get involved with that they will truly miss out if they don't. In addition to that, Surrey Sports Park is very cheap for students so I don't see why someone would not!"
"The opportunities for sport available to me at Surrey was a huge factor that drew me to the University. I am part of the Surrey Netball club. Joining the team has really helped me to settle in at Surrey. The girls are great and it's so nice to train/play and socialise with such a friendly group.
I first started netball in primary school and absolutely loved it. My interest fully developed at secondary school due to motivation from my PE teachers and other girls who played netball at my school. I then joined Turnford Netball club in my age group and got into regional academy. After attending a regional summer camp with the Storm NPL coach I trialled for Surrey Storm under 19 team and was successful.
This year I was honoured to be named captain for my 4th and final season with Surrey NPL. Since being at the University of Surrey I have been part of a new under 23 team and have been training with the Storm Superleague team. Both these opportunities have been so beneficial for me and along with playing for Turnford Premier Division team have caused improvements in my play. These opportunities would not be possible if I had not come to Surrey.
The new gym at Surrey Sports Park is fully equipped allowing me to complete my strength and conditioning programme. Easy access to the courts means I can do any extra training such as ball and wall.
Team Surrey to me is a community of people who all share the common goals of loving sport and wanting to win for Team Surrey. I feel very proud to represent Team Surrey and being a part of this community is amazing on match days as there is support from various people.
Team Surrey and Surrey Sports Park both offer the perfect opportunity to take part in a variety of sports for reduced prices that you may not otherwise have access to so you should take advantage of this opportunity. It is also is a unique chance to meet people of a similar age group with similar interests. I would encourage students to try out as many sports as you whilst you're studying here!"
"My main sport is Air Rifle Shooting. Although this is not a club at the University I have received so much support from the University. I have been lucky enough to be on the HPASS scheme the last two years which has given me a lot of support with my sport.
I have been involved in shooting since 2010 and since then progressed in the sport. My interest began when I was in the Scouts and went along to a local competition, I somehow won the competition and was then selected for the national scout squad and from there in 2011 into the GB Junior Rifle Squad. I have competed internationally with the Great Britain Junior Squad in places such as Oldenburg, Germany and home matches in the UK. While at Surrey I have balanced academic studies at the same time as training and keeping to a fitness programme. I have worked with my strength and conditioning coach that Surrey has provided me to improve my fitness for my sport.
I cannot explain how much the Sports Park has benefited me while I have been at studying at Surrey. Being part of the HPASS programme has been a huge part of my university experience. I have made many contacts as part of this programme and seen my development increase from the support given, the Sports Park was definitely one of the main attractions of Surrey.
Team Surrey is the name in which I am proud to represent the university under. It shows the collaboration of all 47 teams which then go onto compete for the university under the same name.
I feel that sport and exercise should a huge part of the university experience. At Surrey, with the incredible sports facilities, it is not an opportunity to miss. There is also fantastic variety of clubs to try out or join. My advice to any new or current student would be to try out or join a new sport. Even if you just go for the social side to start off, you may actually find you have a natural ability and go on to compete for Team Surrey. The social side of any sport also plays a massive role in the university experience and I would definitely recommend going to the Active Fresher's Fair and signing up to a club."
