Team Surrey is extremely sad to share the news of the untimely passing of our Men’s Performance Rugby Head Coach, Simeon Barnes, who died on Wednesday. An influential figure in the sport of rugby, passionate business leader and most importantly an incredible gentleman who inspired and cared for those around him.
Sim, as most of us knew him, joined the Team Surrey Rugby Programme in 2023 as Forwards Coach, having previously held the same role at London Irish and Harlequins Women. Sim was a driving force for creativity and innovation, always conjuring up new ideas to enhance his playing philosophy and outsmart opponents who came up against his teams. His leadership, passion and pursuit of excellence led him to the position of Performance Rugby Head Coach in 2024, with the vision of taking the University Rugby Programme from Tier 3 into BUCS Super Rugby.
His extensive experience in coaching and mentoring athletes in elite pathways meant he could effortlessly hold the room when he spoke, and was consistently inspirational to each new generation of student athletes he drew into the sporting movement that he wanted to create. He was a powerful advocate for higher education sport, and the importance of combining education and sport to support students’ future endeavours.
Sim will be remembered first and foremost as a friend as well as an active contributor to Team Surrey. He made every day feel like a match-day, through his boundless energy, excitement and passion. The time he gave to everyone, getting to know each individual on a personal level, will be remembered with fondness by so many. Sim loved preparing for the present and future, having already laid the groundwork for a promising season ahead by recruiting top talent and creating a culture at the University of Surrey where rugby is held in high esteem. Sim will always be part of the Team Surrey family and his legacy will live on in the students and staff who had the privilege of knowing him.
Surrey Sports Park would like to extend its condolences to all of Sim’s family and friends – and anyone else who knew and loved him. Our thoughts are with them all at this difficult time.
* We will update this article with details of a book of condolence and any other opportunities to come together to celebrate Sim’s life.
