Team Surrey Stories: BUCS Awards Finalists

Charlotte Ray and Ella Cromack have both been recognised for their exceptional contributions to sport at the University of Surrey, each earning national recognition for their impact on and off the field.

Charlotte was shortlisted for the Chris Potter Student Volunteer Award following an outstanding year of dedication to tennis and padel volunteering. Her work has been instrumental in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all participants, regardless of age, ability or experience. Charlotte has led and delivered sessions across a wide range of groups, from fellow students to young people in the local community, consistently inspiring others to get involved in sport.

A key highlight of Charlotte’s contribution was her role in the Team Surrey Junior Games initiative, where she provided free after-school tennis opportunities for children from areas of high deprivation. Through her energy and creativity, she helped grow the programme significantly, making a lasting impact on the children and their families. Alongside this, Charlotte introduced new ideas to improve accessibility in sport, including disability tennis training for volunteers, ensuring that more students could feel confident and included in sessions.

Her innovation has also transformed the student experience, particularly through the launch of “Friday Night Lights” – a vibrant programme combining music and tennis to create an engaging, social atmosphere. This initiative has dramatically increased participation and helped build a stronger sense of community within the club. Beyond delivery, Charlotte has played a key leadership role as a BUCS team captain, shaping club culture, supporting fundraising efforts, and even promoting sustainability through creative projects. Her passion, leadership and commitment make her a truly deserving nominee.

Alongside Charlotte, Ella Cromack’s achievements have earned her a nomination for BUCS Sportswoman of the Year, recognising an outstanding year of performance and leadership at the highest level of university sport. Ella played a pivotal role in leading the University of Surrey to a historic promotion to BUCS Women’s Super Rugby, demonstrating exceptional consistency, determination and skill throughout the season.

Her success extends beyond university sport, having represented England in the U20 Six Nations and reaching the milestone of 50 appearances for Premiership Women’s Rugby side Harlequins Women. These achievements highlight her dedication, resilience and ability to perform at an elite level while balancing academic and sporting commitments.

Off the pitch, Ella has also shown remarkable strength of character and compassion, raising over £15,000 to support her father’s cancer treatment. This incredible effort reflects not only her determination but also her willingness to use her platform to make a meaningful difference beyond sport.

Together, Charlotte and Ella embody the very best of student sport at Surrey. Whether through volunteering, leadership, performance or personal courage, both students have made a profound impact on their clubs, their communities and the wider sporting landscape - serving as inspiring role models for others to follow.
